Keys Advances, Sets Showdown With Kvitova

Keys (USA) def. Svitolina (UKR) 7-6(4), 4-2 (RET)

Madison Keys earned her first career victory in New Haven, defeating Elina Svitolina 7-6(4), 4-2 (RET) on Monday afternoon. Keys bounced back from 0-4 deficit in the first set to earn the tiebreaker. In the second set, Keys took a 4-2 lead before the Ukrainian retired with a lower back injury. Keys will face two-time Connecticut Open Champion and World No. 4 Petra Kvitova in the second round.

Radwanska (POL) def. Vandeweghe (USA) 6-0, 6-2

Agnieszka Radwanska bounced American Coco Vandeweghe 6-0, 6-2 in the first of two night session matches on Monday. The Pole was dominant throughout, setting the tone early against the hard-hitting Vandeweghe. Radwanska moves on to face Alize Cornet in the second round.

Pliskova (CZE) def. Hercog (SLO) 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-2

Karolina Pliskova recovered from a sluggish start to defeat Polona Hercog 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 in Monday’s nightcap. Hercog was brilliant in the first set, but the Czech fought back to win a second-set tiebreaker and deciding frame. Pliskova will face Olga Savchuk in the second round.

Cornet (FRA) def. Putintseva (KAZ) 2-6, 6-0, 6-2

Alize Cornet battled back to defeat Yulia Putintseva 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 in an opening-round match on the Grandstand. After dropping the first set, the Frenchwoman found her game in a hurry, losing only two games in the final frames. Cornet will face Radwanska in the Round of 16.

Rybarikova (SVK) def. Pennetta (ITA) 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-1

Magdalena Rybarikova continues her impressive run in New Haven, bouncing Flavia Pennetta 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-1 on Monday afternoon. Rybarikova, the 2014 Connecticut Open runner-up, faces Caroline Garcia in a Round of 16 match.

Garcia (FRA) def. Bacsinszky (SUI) 6-3, 6-1

Caroline Garcia scored a 6-3, 6-1 upset of No. 6 seed Timea Bacsinszky for a berth in the Round of 16. The Frenchwoman will face 2014 Connecticut Open runner-up Magdalena Rybarikova in the second round.

Savchuk (UKR) def. Govortsova (BLR) 4-6, 6-3, 4-0 (RET)

In a match-up of qualifiers, Olga Savchuk advanced past Olga Govortsova 4-6, 6-3, 4-0 (RET) in a first-round tilt. After dropping the first set, the Ukrainian evened the match in the second before Govortsova retired. Savchuk will face the winner of tonight’s final match on Stadium Court featuring World. 8 Karolina Pliskova and qualifer Polona Hercog.

Mladenovic (FRA) def. Errani (ITA) 6-2, 4-6, 6-4

Kristina Mladenovic upset No. 8 seed Sara Errani 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to earn a second-round berth. Errani battled back after dropping the first set, but Mladenovich was too much for the Italian on Monday afternoon, earning her first Round of 16 appearance in New Haven. The Frenchwoman will face Grand Slam finalist Dominika Cibulkova in her next match.

Vinci (ITA) def. Bouchard (CAN) 6-1, 6-0

Qualifier Roberta Vinci moved past Genie Bouchard 6-1, 6-0 in the first round of the Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies on Monday afternoon. The Italian advances to the Round of 16 in New Haven for the second time in her career, a 2011 second-round performance. Vinci will face either American Alison Riske or four-time Connecticut Open Champion Caroline Wozniacki in the next round.
