Kvitova Rolls, Halep Stunned, American Riske Scores Upset

Tuesday’s action at the Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies was highlighted by a shocking upset, as top-seed and Defending Champion Simona Halep fell to Magdalena Rybarikova. Petra Kvitova, the 2012 Champion, won in convincing fashion, while Alison Riske, the lone American in the draw, took down sixth-seeded Flavia Pennetta. Let’s take a look back at Tuesday’s match-ups.

Kvitova Makes Quick Work of Makarova
Petra Kvitova, the 2012 Connecticut Open Champion, pounced on Ekaterina Makarova early and never let up, defeating the Russian 6-2, 6-1 in 49 minutes. The Czech looked strong in her opening match, playing lights-out tennis en route to the victory. The Wimbledon Champion will face Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova in the quarterfinals.

Halep Stunned:
A champion here a year ago, world No. 2 and top seed Halep was shocked in her first match of the 2014 Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies, beaten by Rybarikova on Stadium Court, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Rybarikova, the world No. 68, advances to the quarterfinals where she will face American upstart Riske, a winner earlier on Tuesday. For more, click HERE.

Riske Makes Run to Final 8
Riske advanced to the quarterfinals , defeating the No. 6 seed Pennetta 6-1, 7-6(3). Riske scored arguably her biggest win since the US Open last year, when she beat then-world No. 10 Petra Kvitova. The Pittsburgh native will face Rybarikova in the quarterfinals. Riske also teamed with Coco Vandeweghe in an All-American doubles tilt on Stadium Court, defeating Nicole Gibbs and Grace Min, 7-5, 6-2.

Zahlavova-Strycova Halts Lucky Loser Garcia
Zahlavova Strycova bounced lucky loser Garcia of France 7-5, 6-2, moving on to the quarterfinals. The 28-year-old Czech player will face Kvitova, the reigning Wimbledon champion.

Black, Mirza Rally Against Pliskova Sisters
Black and Mirza dropped the first set, but the duo forced a tiebreak and eventually bested Karolina and Kristyna Pliskova 6-7(3), 7-6(2), 10-7 to earn a quarterfinal berth. They will face the winner of Caroline Garcia/Monica Niculescu and Anna-Lena Groenefeld/Klara Koukalova.

Erakovic, Santonja oust Muguruza, Navarro
Marina Erakovic and Arantxa Parra Santonja defeated the duo of Garbine Muguruza and Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 5-7, 10-6, moving on to the quarterfinals draw. Muguruza remains in the singles draw after defeating seventh-seeded Sara Errani on Monday.
