Former Champs Halep, Kvitova Headline Tuesday Night Play

Two matches, two champions, one great night of tennis. Tuesday evening will be just that at the Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies. 2012 Connecticut Open winner Petra Kvitova and defending champion, Simona Halep – the tournament’s top two seeds – are set to play back-to-back matches on Stadium Court.

Champions’ Night
[1] Simona Halep (ROU) vs. Magdalena Rybarikova (SVK)
Stadium Court, 7pm

Halep will begin her title defense against Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia at 7pm. Kvitova follows with a challenging match-up against Ekaterina Makarova, the world No. 18 who was a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon just last month.

Stadium Court, second after 7pm

The 24-year-old Kvitova is fresh off her second Wimbledon title earlier this summer while Halep has had a banner 15 months that has included eight titles, the French Open final and her ascension to the world No. 2 ranking. These two players met in last year’s final.

American Afternoon
[6] Flavia Pennetta (ITA) vs. Alison Riske (USA)
Stadium Court, noon

The American flag will be flying high over Stadium Court for much of Tuesday afternoon as the lone raining U.S. representative, Ali Riske, is in action in singles, then doubles. The Pittsburgh native is pitted against No. 6 seed Flavia Pennetta in a second-round clash, the Italian having made the semifinals at the US Open last year.

Stadium Court, third after noon

Later, Riske teams up with countrywoman Coco Vandeweghe in an all-American affair on the doubles court as they take on alternates Nicole Gibbs and Grace Min, who made the main draw after an injury withdrawal.
