#CTOPEN14: What’s on Tap – August 15

The 2014 Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies begins Friday with qualifying matches and the annual draw ceremony. A breakdown of some notable entries into the qualifying field, along with a few matches to watch, can be found below.

Qualifying: A strong qualifying field featuring young up-and-comers and seasoned veterans will vie for admission into the main draw. Shuai Peng, most noted for her top-flight doubles artistry, finds herself atop the singles qualifying draw in New Haven, sporting a Round of 16 Wimbledon appearance and a triumph in Nanchang this year. Karolina Pliskova, who advanced to the finals at Nurnberg and Pattya City, is the second seed, followed by third-seeded Caroline Garcia, who won her first career WTA Tour title this year, defeating Jelena Jankovic in the finals in Bogota. Rounding out the top-four is German Mona Barthel, who recently earned her first WTA Tour title of the season at Bastad.

Matches to Watch:
Donna Vekic (CRO) vs. Belinda Bencic (SUI)
Vekic and Bencic will get us started at 10 a.m. in what should be an entertaining tilt. The Croatian earned her first career WTA Tour title this season with a win at Kuala Lumpur, while the Swiss advanced to the semifinals in Charleston.

Lauren Davis (USA) vs. Timea Bacsinszky (SUI)
Lauren Davis, one of seven Americans in the field, looks to add to her young but impressive resume in New Haven. Davis boasts wins this season over top-20 foes and Connecticut Open participants Sara Errani and Flavia Pennetta, and top-10 player Victoria Azarenka, but she has her hands full with Bacsinszky, who qualified for both the Wimbledon and French Open Main Draws this season.

Francesca Schiavone (ITA) vs. Tsvetana Pironkova (BUL)
Two accomplished veterans take to the Grandstand following Davis-Bacsinszky in what should be a stellar match-up. Schiavone, the 2010 French Open Champion and 2011 finalist, will try to outlast Pironkova, a 2011 Wimbledon semifinalist.
